When Helena's ground freezes and thaws repeatedly between October and April, any deck footing that doesn't reach below the 36-to-48-inch frost line will heave upward, pulling the post with it and progressively cracking the ledger-board connection to the house. Helena's combination of UV intensity at elevation and moisture from spring snowmelt also degrades surface materials faster than lower-altitude climates. Untreated or improperly gapped decking boards cup and split as moisture enters from below while UV breaks down the surface from above. Composite decking rated for cold-climate thermal expansion and pressure-treated lumber selected for ground-contact ratings both respond differently to these conditions—and choosing the wrong material for a given exposure creates maintenance cycles that correct workmanship should eliminate entirely.
